Juan Sebastián Barbera (Mexico, 1964)

Studied Art at the National School of Plastic Arts of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and Industrial Design at the Metropolitan Autonomous University of Mexico City (UAM). Winner of the international contest “Juguete Arte Objeto” in Mexico (1995) and participant in the international project “Periolibros” and “Iberoamérica Pinta” (1997-1998) promoted by Fondo de Cultura Económica (FCE) and UNESCO. His work has been featured in more than thirty individual and collective exhibitions in France, India, Mexico, United States and Spain, and also worldwide edited resulting in books like “Incantations” (Spain) and “Almost an Object” (Mexico).

Raised in an environment of music and art, he has developed a unique expressionist style inspired by great masters such as Picasso, Orozco, and Schiele. Sometimes referred to as the “Picasso Mexican”, he addresses topics such as love, eroticism, perversion, possession, loneliness and sadness always through the human figure as the protagonist, usually female and naked. Based on pure lines that exchange environment and reality with character and dreams, he creates introverted stories, in which simple touches of bluish and reddish colors express the intimacies, desires and the most mundane and at the same time higher questions.
